Your vehicle's battery provides the power to start the engine and run electrical systems when the engine is off. Modern vehicles have more electrical demands than ever, from infotainment systems to multiple computers. A weak battery can cause starting problems, dim lights, and erratic electrical behavior.

Car batteries typically last 3 to 5 years, though extreme temperatures can shorten their life. New England winters are especially hard on batteries because cold weather reduces their capacity just when you need the most power to start a cold engine.

The charging system keeps your battery charged while driving. The alternator generates electricity, the voltage regulator controls the charge rate, and belts and wires connect everything. A failing alternator or bad connection can drain your battery or overcharge it, causing premature failure.
